Leadership Skills
The word "leadership" simply means the ability to motivate a group of people toward a common goal. A leader is someone whom others consistently look up to for guidance and advice. Being a leader is not just a responsibility, but it is also an honor. The following are essential steps in becoming a successful leader.
Solve problems. Yes, solve. NOT CREATE! Before jumping to conclusions, observe the situation carefully and listen attentively to what your subordinates have to say. Try your best to avoid any hasty generalization as it may bring the feeling of dissatisfaction to the other group members.
Think of the BIG picture. It is a norm for some people to waste most of their time on something that is not so important. For instance, as a lecturer, it is more important for you to make sure your students understand the materials that you are teaching very well, rather than thinking hard on what to wear to class that morning.
Be active. Don't be a lazy bump. Instead, try to be a hands-on leader. Just because you are a leader, it does not mean that you get to do less work. A good leader will not even think of the "sit back, relax and enjoy" phrase.
Remember that it is not all about you. Always keep in mind that without your teammates or subordinates, whatever project that you are doing WILL NOT succeed. In another words, they are your "tulang belakang" (Translation to English : backbone). So, appreciate them. Smile at them. Laugh even when their jokes are not so funny. Treat them for lunch. Anything that will put a smile on their face. =)
"A leader is best when people barely know s/he exists, when his/her work is done, his/her aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves."
