SMS is a form of communication through media technology using hand phones. In my opinion,SMS is a form of non verbal communication rather than verbal communication.
Firstly, messages sent via SMS do not involve direct speech by hearing one's voice during the conversation, thus non verbal.Despite this,it is possible to determine the facial expressions on one's face and the voice tone by reading a text message.
Also, through an SMS one can convey a number of messages from the formal business transition to the more emotional message that may require some expressions, thus qualifying it to be a form of non-verbal communication. For example,a text as follows was sent from an estranged father to his daughter:'My dearest girl, how are you?I miss you so much and i long everyday to see you once again.I do miss you unbearably and love you with all my heart and being. Please take care of yourself and remember that I will always love you.Love,Dad.'
From the above message,it is possible to tell the emotion and passion that the father has for his for his daughter no matter the reason for which he is estranged. Therefore,SMS is a form of non evrbal communication because the normal sending and receiving of messages despite the lack of voice exchange.Vanessa Bitature
